Question
having trouble finding a simple dark large bedroom dresser for my master bedroom. i just picked up a freebie that is pine and stained light. id like to get a modern, dark flat finish look. this is mostly for fun and experimentation. i like the look of the lightly-sanded-on-the-corners look - maybe black with orange/golden under neath? what products do i need to use? primer? gesso? and what about paint? thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Muriel
Nice to hear from you
Sounds like a fun project.
What you could do is simply paint the dresser black, then sand the corners etc. to expose the golden pine underneath.
Or if you want a color other than the pine then simply paint that color on then your black.
No need for priming but you must deglaze the dresser surface for the any paint to stick. Use 120 grit sandpaper to do this.
If you want a flat finish look you can apply a matte glaze over the black paint.
Use all water based paints.
No gesso needed.
Good Luck

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
