Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Old? Rocking Chair

Question
HI Mark,

I just reupholstered an old(?) rocking chair.  It had sinuous springs and a burlap covered box of springs made by Nachman(tag still attached).  My mom got the chair about 20 years ago from a friend who claimed it was his grandmother's chair.  I would like to date the chair, and based on what I can find out about the two types of springs I think it was first made between the 20's and 40's.  I also think this is the second time it has been recovered. (so maybe one or both sets of springs are newer than the chair) How close am I?

Thanks!

Jessica

Answer
Hi Jessica,

I think you are most likely correct,  based on your observations it appears the chair may date back to between the 20's and 40's,  if you found straw, coconut fiber and horse hair as padding materials then it is pre 40's.

Although the best way to date furniture is by the frame, and not the upholstery findings.

I hope this helps.

Mark Miller.
