Question
I have finished a pine door with stain and coating of Helmsman Spar clear finish. The finish is too glossy is there any thing I can do to create more of a satin finish short of stripping down and starting over? Is a product available that would only remove the clear coat leaving the stain finish untouched?

Answer
Hi Clint
Nice to hear from you.
This is easily solved and no stripping needed.
Give the door a sanding with 120 grit paper and apply a coat of satin spar varnish.
Problem solved.
Regards
Eileen
PS the only thing that will remove spar varnish is paint stripper, but it will take some stain with it but stripping is not necessary.

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
