Question
I have 6 cabinets that are turning pink w/ age and I only hae one week to re-finish them in. I love the look of a black stain or black laquered finish. what steps do I need to take that will be fast, yet lasting?

Answer
Hi Michelle
Nice to hear from you.
First all the existing finish needs to be removed.
This is not fast I'm afraid, and I am wondering if you should consider painting black if you are under the gun time wise.
Michelle you do not say what type of wood this is and the wood will determine the outcome of your finished doors if you choose to strip them.
Oak and maple for instance will not take a black stain unless its a dye stain which is tricky to use.
You will need some experience before even considering this.
The black lacquer finish is done by a pro not us do it yourselfers.
Having said that, I have seen black paint used in a technique similar to the pickled look but only on oak cabinets.
The pieces must be stripped, then the black water based paint is mixed with water, painted on with a brush then wiped back with a rag.
A clear coat is applied over this.
So I leave you some things to think about.
Get back if needed
Kind regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
