Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/1979 China Cabinet

Question
I just purchased a china cabinet off eBay.  It is painted white, but has some chipping paint (which was described before purchase). The seller stated she bought it new in 1979.  Since I have a young child, should I be concerned this paint contains lead?  I thought lead paint use was discontinued by 1978.  Thanks.

Answer
Yes, tricky wording that she used. I believe if she bought it new in 1979 it actually may have been manufactured in 78 or even before. At my store we sell things "brand new" but they were in a warehouse in Denmark for a year(or longer), then in my warehouse for a little while, and then finally on display until they sell.

I would have a professional look at the cabinet and tell you whether it is actually lead paint or not. Its not worth taking the chance. And if it is lead, maybe he can recommend a proper sealer to use to keep your child safe from any harm.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
