Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/dining table and chairs - do it myself?

Question
I just purchased a formal dining table and chairs from an estate sale. There are a lot of surface scratches and some are where you can see the white of the wood.  It is cherry or cherry stain - no veneers.  I'm not scared of doing the work but never have done this before.  Is this something that would be fairly easy (yet time consuming) for me? And if I tried and messed up - would a professional be able to do it after I attempted?  The estimates from professionals are quite high and I love trying new things I just would like your opinion and how I would go about refinishing it myself.  Thanks so much,  and I can send photos if need be

Answer
Hi Melissa
Nice to hear from you.
As you have found out, having this done by a pro costs big bucks.
Its something anyone can do with instructions they are willing to follow.
And you already know its time consuming so you won't give up half way through the project.
If you messed up and then had to take it to a pro, you will pay more overall.
But before you attempt this there are a few things we must know.
The first is the expected outcome of the finished job.
Sounds odd but before you start you must know this.
So how do you know this?
The answer is by experience.
The experience to know the type of wood the set is made from.
The experience to know the type of finish you will be removing.
The experience to know the type of stain it currently has.
The experience to repair any damage either structural, or scratches or stains.
You have pictures that I would like to see before we attempt any instructions.
Post a follow up to me if you wish to proceed and I will send you my email.
Melissa I think you can learn this, and I will help you.
We all have to start somewhere.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
