Subject: dresser drawer glides

Question
We have a 1950's dresser which does not have drawer glides, and the drawers are difficult to open and close.  Is it possible to install glides?  Any other suggestions?

Answer
Well, you could get your own runners and try installing them. To purchase runners online try schockmetal.com They are very specific with measurements so you can be sure to get the right fit.

Another idea I found easy is making wooden drawer slides. You simply cut strips of wood and attach them to the inside of the dresser. But you also need to cut out grooves in the drawers so they can slide onto the wooden strips. Over time I have found that my dressers with wooden slides are easier to maintain. The drawers slide out nice and quiet and if I ever have to replace anything, its pretty easy to just replace some wood or sand something down when needed.

I used both wood glue and screws to fasten the wooden slides, giving them good support. The only part that is a bit tricky is just making sure you measure correctly. (You want the drawer slides and drawer grooves to line up right.)

I don't know if you have any "Rockler" stores near you, but I think some of the bigger hardware stores may sell regular drawer runners if you wanted to go in that direction.

Hope this helps, good luck!
