Question
Hi!

Please advise as to best way to fasten pre-fab free standing wardrobe to the wall (wallboard. Dimensions: 72"H x 30"W x 21"D. Weight: ~111 lb. Material: veneer-covered particle board. The manufacturer does not provide wall strap in the kit nor mentions fastening to the wall, but I'd feel more secure if it were fastened, especially since my floors are slightly uneven. Many thanks!

Answer
Hi Sandra,

Even though your unit didn't come with a wall strap, it's usually pretty easy to rig something to fasten the unit to the wall, I recommend a couple of 3" right angle brackets, something you can find at any hardware store.

Here's how I would do it. With the unit against the wall, in it's normal position, draw a light pencil line, marking it's height on the wall, Then pull the unit away, and find two studs within that pencil area. Attach the angle brackets to the studs, with the angle pointing down (and the horizontal piece coming out toward you) just above that pencil line.  When you push the unit back into place, the metal straps will be right above the top of your wardrobe.  Now screw the angle bracket into the top of the wardrobe. You'll never see them, but the chest will be attached to the wall, and much safer than before.

Hope my directions make sense. If not, write back with your e-mail address and I'll send you a very simple sketch of what I mean. It'll be a simple JPG drawing.

Good luck, just a couple of 3" angle brackets (maybe $2 or $3) and a little bit of your time should solve the problem.
