Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Paint/primer

Question
I would like to paint my outdated kitchen cabinets. The problem is they are a vinyl overlay over particleboard. Is there a primer I can use to assure adhesion? I'm aware of "fusion" spray paint for plastics, but I'm afraid of "runs".

Answer
Hi John, while I don't recommend painting this type of cabinet, a primer sealer like Zinsser's Bullseye 1-2-3 will grip pretty well to anything, as long as you're careful to prep it correctly. That means a thorough degreasing/ cleaning and a scuff sanding with 220-320 grit sandpaper. The real issue is, that no matter how much work you put into these and how good a painter you are, they probably will still look like what they are....and they will not hold up very well, even with a good primer. The stuff is just not meant to be painted......I would suggest saving your pennies for replacing/refacing. It's a lot of work to paint a kitchen full of cabinets, and make them come out looking professional, especially if they are inexpensive cabinets to begin with.
Hope that helps, even though it's probably not what you wanted to hear...If you do decide to forge ahead, start with one door or even a drawer front, to see what you're in for, and the final result. Best of luck- Greg
