Question
Hi,I have Pine Doors in my house and i have stained them with Sikkens mahogany stain which is too dark,is there anyway i can make them lighter ie rubbing them with wire wool..... Regards Dave....

Answer
Hi David
Nice to hear from you.
So sorry this has happened.
Heres what I would attempt. It will remove some of the stain but not all I fear.
Remove the doors, strip as much of the color as possible out with an MC paint stripper as follows.
-Work in sections
-Apply the stripper
-Wait the recommended time
-Rag off excess
-Then while the wood is still wet, use your wire wool and start rubbing vigourously.
Dave I don't feel rubbing with wire wool alone will do much.
Pine absorbs stain deeply and the stripper will draw it out a bit.
After stripping you may be into bleaching.
Just the way it is with pine I'm afraid.
Good Luck with this.
Regards

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
