Question
Hi,
I have a hutch from the 1950's, I would like to sand the finish a little and restrain.  Do you know if there was lead in the stain used in the 1950's?  This has never been refinished and needs a little updating.
Thank you for any help,
Valerie

Answer
Hi Valerie
Nice to hear from you.
There was lead in paint during the 50's but I have never heard of lead being in stain that was used on furniture.
But could I offer an alternative to your idea.
What do you think about a good cleaning with mineral spirits and a fine steel wool pad as a scrubber followed by a light coat of tung oil.
The tung oil is applied with a rag.
This could save you some work.
Keep me posted
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
