Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/fixing trim and a corner of a table

Question
QUESTION: my dog has chewed the edge of the trim around our bay window and also the corner of our solid cherry coffee table.  I'd like to fix these areas but have two questions. should I sand down the splintered area before filling and can you recommend a stainable filler/or putty to use?  thanks!

ANSWER: Hi Diane, I would only sand if necessary, and remove any loose splinters, you want to be careful about changing the profile by sanding. A latex wood filler should work for smaller damage, but if you have large chunks missing, filler may not be enough. You can find these fillers in colors usually, but you'll have to touch up for an exact match, and that can be tricky.....

QUESTION: thanks that really helped.  can you recomment a brand; theres so many to choose from.
The store I was shopping at recommended elmers stainable wood filler?... sorry I didn't ask this question before

Answer
Yes Elmers is good, but they're all pretty decent, just remember that none of them will give you a perfect match, so some touch up and then finish repair will be needed. The other issue is the dog.....it'll likely do this again, they tend to go back to the same place to chew......
