Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/kitchen cabinet matching

Question
Hi Ellen,

You recently gave Dave some advice regarding trying to match existing 20 yr old oak cabinets with newer oak cabinets.  He did indicate that the two sets of cabinets would not be right next to each other.  We, too, have older oak cabinets.  Frames are in good shape, but we would like to replace the doors and drawer fronts.  Do you think we could successfully strip the frames, and with minwax stains, approximate the color of new doors?  I know refacing the frames is an option, but almost sounds like more work than stripping and staining.  I appreciate your thoughts on the matter or any suggestions you might have.  We are not planning on spending many more years in the house, but would like to spruce it up for ourselves as well as a future owner.

Thanks!
Marilyn

Answer
Hi Marilyn
Nice to hear from you.
If you are careful in the color selection of the new doors and drawer fronts it should be possible to strip and stain the cases to match.
I would select the light oak or honey oak or golden oak color some folks call it.
I see no reason why the stripped cases could not be stain matched this light color.
If you want dark, you are getting into an area that is difficult for us do it yourselfers.
Your new doors and drawers will likely have a lacquer finish but you will use a poly on the cases which is fine. Just make sure you match the sheen.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
