Question
Eileen,
I like the method you detailed on 9/13/2004 regarding using tsp & steel wool to refinish kitchen cabinetry.  I would like to use this method to re-poly my 20 year old cabinets.  They are natural oak (no stain).  Can I follow this method as well (leaving out the staining step, of course.)
Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Maureen
Nice to hear from you.
In order to apply poly over poly you must not only have a clean surface but the wood must be prepped so the new poly will stick.
The scrub with steel wool and TSP accomplishes both these things in one operation.
I recently finished refreshing an oak vanity in my bathroom using this method. It looks like new.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
