Question
Hi Eileen - I have two questions for you.
1. I used Pledge on my kitchen cabinets and now my hardwood floors closest to them is like a skating rink, how can I fix this so no one hurts themselves?
2. We have alot of built in oak shelves as well as half walls with oak toppers at our front entrance close to my living/dining room.  I have dark wood furniture and I would like the shelves  and toppers to be a closer match.  What is the best way to achieve this?  I'm not opposed to paint, however I don't want to have to deal with chips.
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Caroline
Nice to hear from a fellow Canadian (once removed LOL)
Oh my gosh get this Pledge off before someone falls.
Use a rag dipped in some mineral spirits (called varsol in Canada).
This will not hurt the hardwood floor.
The only way to get your oak dark is by painting or sending it out to a pro who will spray it with colored lacquers (can't do this with the walls though LOL).
I understand how you feel about painting and I agree. Paint is great until it gets some usage. You can clear coat it for a bit more durability though.
At this time its 31 degrees below zero F.
Bet you miss it LOL
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
