Question
QUESTION: I am trying to make an exact replica of the Purdue University water tower in the form of a drink dispenser. I know how to do everything except the woodwork for the oval top. I don't really know where to start or how to make a rounded structure from wood. The oval itself is to be 3 ft. in diameter and 1.30 ft tall. Thank you for your assistance.
IMAGE: Purdue Water Tower

ANSWER: Hey Chance, are you trying to make the structure in the picture with the "P" painted on it? I do not know of a way to make that the size you want it........that would be a huge chunk of wood, and if it needs to be hollowed out as well, then it would be almost impossible.....also, by drink dispenser, what do you mean?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes we want to paint the P on it and by drink dispenser I mean that we want to put sealant in it and make it into something resembling a gatorade cooler that you see at football games.

Answer
Not only is it almost impossible to make a shape like that, that big, it won't stand up to having ice and water in it, as it would be costructed from multiple pieces of wood with many glue joints.Perhaps if it was fiberglassed inside, but even if this could be constructed it would be exhorbitantly expensive, weigh a ton, and be quite unwieldy.....perhaps a fiberglassed mold would be a better way to construct such a thing...but I'm not familiar with those techniques....
