Question
Our son has chosen carpentry as his profession (as his father and grandfather before him).  He has done well in the custom furniture end of carpentry and loves it.  However there is one problem....he is becoming discouraged due to the problems he has had with the staining and finishing process.  I am wondering if you offer (or know of someone who offers) classes on fine wood finishing?  We live in the North Jersey area.

Thank you so much,  Robin Teitsma

Answer
Hi Robin, I'm not familiar with anything in your area...there are schools and seminars all over the country, but many of them are expensive and would require travel, lodging, etc.....Jeff Jewitt teaches in Indiana, there's another renowned one in Minnesota, and yet another in Maine....many Adult Ed places do offer courses on finishing, too....but they're probably just the basics.....there's also Taunton Press, which owns the many "Fine" publications (Fine Woodworking, Fine Homebuilding, etc), and they have a huge assortment of books, videos, DVD's, etc. Regardless of how he chooses to educate himself, the bulk of that education is the hands on experience of doing....there's NO substitute for that, whether guided by an instructor, or a DVD.There's also more and more online content every day, and premium, pay sites like the FineWoodworking site as well....Hope that helps a little- Please feel free to post back if need be, here's a few links to get you started...Greg
