Question
How can I smooth out a new varathane finish I have applied on 4 dresser tops? There are some small air bubbles and some dust. Is there a way to do this without having to apply any other products to the finish, such as wax or a sealer? Thank you very much for your knowledge.

Answer
Hi Mike
Nice to hear from you.
Jeff in order to get rid of the air bubbles and dust specks the top needs to be sanded again.
I would use fine steel wool instead of sandpaper. It won't scratch.
But there is no way of getting out of another coat of finish.
You do not say how many coats you have applied so far but if you have 3 (all thats needed), now, why not just dilute your poly with some mineral spirits and wipe on a final coat with a lint free rag.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
