Question The oak door I need help with is in Florida. It has been weathered by sun and rain. The lower part of the wood is rough grain and gray/white at the bottom. I want to fix the door because it has extended panels on both sides of the door entry and bevel glass. The upper half is less damage than the bottom.
What steps and material do I need to restore this door?
Answer Hi Penny, the bottom half of doors like this are always worse because of the splashing of water at the bottom, and they stay wet longer as well. When they're allowed to get this bad, you can't save the original finish...the door would need to be chemically stripped with stripper to completely remove the old finish, then, if it's really dark and stained under the finish, an Oxalic acid solution can be used to bleach the dark stains out, and the a thorough sanding and refinishing with a penetrating finish or exterior urethane or Spar varnish. If you have to match the door to the existing side panels, you're probably better off refinishing the entire surround, as it's all the same age, and probably suffering as well. It's also important to make sure to completely finish the end grain as well, on top and bottom of the door, and that means removing the door for refinishing, which will take a few days...a piece of plywood can be cut for the door opening and screwed in place from the inside while doing the job....this is a large undertaking, and if you've never done this type of work, I would seriously consider having a Pro evaluate it with you and give you an estimate to do it properly.( a few, actually)Hope that helps- post back if need be- regards- Greg
