Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks - wood desk w/ water stains

Expert: Greg Scholl - 10/28/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi Greg,
Let me start by saying that my experience in this area is zero, zip, nada! But I hope that you can help me anyway. I am moving to a new office where there is a big beautiful wooden desk. Unfortunately, the folks who used it before me didn't take such great care so there are several rather large stains (they appear to be water stains). I am not sure what type of wood the desk is made of although it does look similar to item 12b on this site: http://www.specialtywoods.com/desks.htm

I've read all of the tricks online about how to get rid of water stains- everything from mayonnaise, to toothpaste, to ironing. What do you recommend? I don't know that I'll get the stains 100% out but I would like to greatly reduce them to the best of my amateur ability :)

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful!

ANSWER: Hi Tonya, are the stains white, black, rough to the touch? Can you post a picture?

QUESTION: The stains are white. Not sure if they are rough to the touch; I don't think they are. I will double check when I get to work tomorrow and also take photos. I'll send them tomorrow evening. Thanks for your help!

ANSWER: I'm afraid you'll only be able to attach a single picture...but from what you describe it sounds like the finish is pretty damaged, and you'll have few options.....

QUESTION: Hi again Gary. Here is a photo of the desk. The spots do feel a bit grainy but not very rough. I don't expect that I'll get all of the stains out I would just like some idea on how to reduce their appearance. I did purchase a clear deskcover from Staples to hide/protect most of the damage. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Tonya, anything that would work to heal this type of damage would likely be solvent based, smell a bit, and require a few days to dry fully...something that couldn't be done in an office setting.I'm afraid it's too far gone for any simple fix. Can't you get the employer to have this repaired in the interest of extending the life of the desk? It would be quite costly to replace such a large desk......but fairly inexpensive to have the top refinished...
