Question
I purchased an expensive set about fifteen yrs. ago and never waxed or cleaned it, some of the chair backs have fine cracks in them. What product should I use to protect it and to stop the wood from drying out?

Answer
Hi Bob, there isn't a product that can keep it from drying out.Furniture dries out from lack of humidity, damage from heat, especially in Winter. If there are visible cracks in the chairs, they've already been damaged, and there's no product that will fix that. It's important to maintain relative humidity in a space, and in our surroundings, for the health of us, our furniture, paintings, leather items, etc., etc. Properly finished furniture needs little maintenance, an occasional wax or oil based polish is good for the finish, but "feeding the wood" is a myth...especially finished wood, and over applying these products can actually damage a finish. But the real enemy is an overly dry environment, as items made from natural materials will always equalize themselves to their environment, and if it's too dry, or too damp, damage can occur. An inexpensive Hygrometer can help one maintain an environment, indicating when to add moisture to the environment or vice-versa....but it does take diligence and attention to maintain the environment. You've heard of "climate controlled" environments, like those in a Museum, Fur storage, Librarys, etc....this is the first line of defense in maintaining and preserving natural materials.......hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
