Question Dear Eileen, I have an antique cupboard I purchased five years ago for $950. It stands about 7 feet tall, is a step-back, has scalloped edging and square nails. The sides are single pieces of pine. The patina is wonderful on most of it, but the interior of the shelves is peeling badly. I'd like to repaint the interior, but I don't want to devalue the piece. The current paint is red and seems to be the first coat. It's very dark. I want to brighten it up with a fresh coat of milky white. I just can't bear displaying dishes on that scaly red surface. This cupboard was said to originate in New Hampshire and was estimated to be Civil War era. Should I paint?
Answer Hi Sandi
Nice to hear from you.
Very interesting question.
I actually read it several times so I am giving this lots of thought.
And heres what I came up with LOL.
You paid a considerable amount for the cupboard so I know you must love it.
But you cannot bear displaying your dishes on the red scaly shelves.
You have two choices.
Paint the shelves white or sell the cupboard.
I'll bet the answer is clear to you now.
And you know Sandi I don't feel this will compromise the value at all. I know in your eyes it will improve it and likely everyone else will think so too.
A piece of furniture that is not functional is not much value.
If we can improve the appearance of our old things it ensures they will be around for many more years. Down the road when its in someone elses care they can remove all the interior paint if they see fit. No harm will be done.
Great question
Kind Regards
Eileen
