QuestionQUESTION: What should I use to replace the thin batting and spanish moss type material I found laid on top of the saggy webbing in the deck of the old sofa I am reupholstering? Webbing will be replaced and 6-inch thick seat grade foam will be used for the seat cushions. Thanks.
ANSWER: Hi,
The best material to cover the foam is a layer of bonded Dacron, or bonded polyester fiber. That is available from from any upholstery supplies vendor.
You can also use quilted Dacron batting but it is a little more difficult to work with.
Under no circumstances should you use cotton batting since it will not give with the foam and with use will disintegrate into hard lumps.
I hope this information helps, please don't hesitate to contact me if you need further pointers.

QUESTION: Is it necessary to use anything at all between the wrapped foam seat cushion and the new webbing? That's where the batting and spanish moss stuff was. Thank you.
AnswerHi,
Yes, you should have a sheet of burlap over the webbing, the reason for that is that over time the edges of the webbing will cut the foam as if it were a knife and the foam will work it's way through the openings between the strips of webbing. It is also a good idea to spray the deck with foam cement - available in aerosol cans - so that the foam will stay in place and not shift.
I hope this helps.
