Question Moved into a home with kitchen cabinets that are perhaps alder and have a very low sheen. There were no knobs, and a couple of the cabinets have the sheen worn off where the homeowner's fingers would rub against the wood panel between the two cabinet doors. A couple of drawers have sun damage discoloration. I have NO TALENT, and was wondering if some kind of tinted wax I could put on all the cabinets, or if I'd make things worse if I tried to add some varnish or lacquer to the dull spots? Same thing for some window moldings - if there are any tricks besides painting them? Thank you!
Answer Hi Jolene, a tinted wax won't really do much for you....there's really no easy way to do what you want I'm afraid...typically when a finish shows this kind of wear and missing color, etc....it's a sign that they've really lived their useful life, and refinishing is an option, but that requires stripping the old finish off with stripper, and properly refinishing the cabinets. This isn't a recommended job for an admitted novice, I'm afraid. It takes skill, knowledge, and experience to do kitchen cabinet finishing, especially if you want a professional looking job that will be beautiful and durable.....trying to guess what the finish is/was, and spot finish the bad areas will be frustrating and likely lead to a mess......the window moldings are an easier fix, depending on how bad they are...but if they are severely moisture damaged, discolored, etc....they're also candidates for stripping and refinishing. This type of restoration can be learned, but it's not something that's really easy, there are a lot of variables and conditions that will lead to different methods, products, and techniques......post back- Greg
