Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks - Torn cabinet

Expert: Greg Scholl - 11/2/2009

Question
Hello!
Recently we painted our kitchen.  And we taped around the edge of our cabinets.  When we went to pull the tape off, it ripped the wood (what looks like wallpaper to me!) off the side of the cabinet.  The cabinets are real wood, but I'm guessing they used some type of veneer for the sides??
Could you give me any suggestions on how to repair the torn spot?
Thanks so much!

Answer
Hi Kristina, this sounds like a vinyl veneer which is used on some older, cheaper cabinets, and will look like wallpaper as you've described, but it could be wood too, just a very thin veneer...what's under it? is it a particle board or fiber board substrate? Typically there is no way to repair this well if there's a clear or stained clear finish...but if it's going to be painted... it might be possible to just use some drywall compound or spackle to fill and smooth the ripped area with a wide taping knife and feather in the repair, sand smooth, fill a second time if needed, then prime and paint it...you might have to get some glue under the veneer around the edge where it ripped off with a pallet knife or other thin blade if it's loose, as the remaining "skin" may not be adhered well because it did rip off.Tap it with your fingernail, and you'll hear a difference if it's loose versus an area that's not loose..you can just tape it down with a little blue masking tape until it dries after getting the glue in.Hope that helps- post back if need be- regards-Greg
