Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/butcher block

Question
Hi! We just purchased a butcher block cart from IKEA made of birch. Should I stain or treat this before using it? Won't things stain it if I don't? Thanks!

Answer
Butcher block is usually natural wood that is not sealed. They sometimes treat it to help it resist some nature, but it will not resist a water spill that is not wiped up right away. I have heard that sealing the natural wood improperly can be a mistake because if you clog the natural wood pores the wood cannot breathe, and this could lead to cracking or damage of the wood.

You should not put hot, cold, or wet things directly on it for the safest bet. Make sure to condition the wood 2-3 times a year to help prevent the wood from drying out naturally.
