Question
OUr house was built 6 years ago, and already I have oily fingerprints on my kitchen cupboard doors and  around drawer pulls.  The cabinets are alder wood with a light colored stain.  I have tried soap, 409, vinegar, and Guardsman wood cleaner.  Nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Christie
Nice to hear from you.
This area is always a problem for greasy finger marks.
I am surprised the products you used failed.
I want you to go to the hardware store and get the smallest bottle of Mineral spirits.
Its called varsol here in Canada so try that name too but both are the same thing.
Use a soft rag dipped in the varsol to wipe these marks away.
This will work.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
