Question
I am trying to find a small spiral stairs to gain access to my loft, the area for the stairs would be where an old airing cupboard stood, measuring 760mm wide x 870mm deep, can this be done so far all spirals looked at require larger area.

Answer
Michael,

Sadly the spirals are terribly restricted by codes.  Both CABO, ICBO, the International Code, and BOCA all have a section on spirals.  As a result, non of the manufacturers will build outside of those code specifications that do not meet the builder inspector's standards.  Usually an opening you describe will only fit a pull down ladder of sorts.  You could probably have a local carpenter build a spiral, but you'd be aware of liability issues in the event someone was hurt.  You could possibly have the local building department classify your spiral as ladder.  I've seen that done before with some cities.   Sorry I'm nut much help here.

I can answer all staircase balustrade questions where handrails, newels posts, balusters (wood and metal), and stair treads are concerned. I cannot help with cabinetry and floor (outside of stair-related treads and risers), as well as stain and finish issues unless staircase related.
