Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/table damaged by heat pad

Question
Hi Eileen,  I have borrowed a dining room table from my mother in law.  It is "antique" - found in an abandoned fishing lodge.  They had it refinished but she has always kept a protective heat pad table cover on it.  When I removed the cover, white fuzz was stuck all over the table.  The leaves of the table are fine because they are frequently removed.  The rest of the table not only has this white fuzz but feels rough and a bit sticky.  I don't want to refinish the whole table since it's not really mine, nor do it want to damage it further in trying to remove the fuzz.  Any advice?

Answer
Hi Sue
Nice to hear from you.
What a shame this happened.
Its been my experience that the cloths stick because of lots of wax on the surface of the top.
Try mineral spirits. Dampen a rag and wipe.
Mineral spirits are available at all hardware stores.
Good Luck.
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
