Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Painting over Stain

Question
I have built in book shelves with a fairly dark stain.  I would like to use a black paint over the stain to achieve a "black rubbed" affect.  In other words, would like some of the wood stain to show thru.  Can you paint over the stain with little or no prep?

Answer
Hi Paula
Nice to hear from you.
You will not be painting over the stain but over the finish that is currently over the stain.
And yes you can do this with a little prep.
Just a light scuff with 120 sandpaper is all thats needed.
I like your idea.
Good Luck
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
