Question
My husband and I inherited a Lane Cedar Chest made in the 60s.  It has a very shiny finish with some black speckles in it.  We really wanted to refinish this white with the distressed look.  We have no idea where to start.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Marissa
Nice to hear from you.
First you will need to lightly sand your chest before you apply the white paint.
This distressed look is done by sanding back areas that usually get wear. The corners and around the handle area etc. but be aware that unless this chest is fully stripped of finish before you paint it the underlying color will be what it currently is now.
After painting you can apply a clear coat in a water based poly.
Not sure if this is what you had in mind Melissa but get back to me if I missed the mark LOL.
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
