Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Wood Staining

Question
I had some cabinet doors replaced on some old built-ins.  The original wood was a stained and polyurethaned pine.  I don't have the name of the original stain. I am trying to match it as closely as possible. No stain seems a close enough match.  I think the color has yellowed. It has been about 5 years. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Peggy
Nice to hear from you.
Yes I have a suggestion.
Mix one part liquid drain opener with one part water.
Wear eye and hand protection and apply this to the pine with a brush.
You will see it instantly yellows the wood.
Over this (after drying of course),you apply a Minwax oil stain. Possibly Minwax Golden Oak color but you will have to judge.
This method serves two purposes. It yellows the wood but also eliminates the blotching pine is so prone to.
Always test in a hidden area before proceeding.
Good Luck

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
