Question
I need suggestions on to prep furniture pieces that are are difficult to sand. I have a great rattan drink cart that I would like to repaint. The original paint is semi-gloss so I need to clean and degloss.  The problem is the wrapped pieces of rattan and the crevices they create which would be impossible to sand. Is there another technique or product that removes gloss, or a primer that will work on semi-gloss.

Answer
Hi Debra
Nice to hear from you.
To prep for painting in these circumstances, you can use a TSP solution and a good stiff scrub brush.
This will deglaze the existing finish and allow the new paint to stick.
TSP is sold at all hardware stores in powder or liquid form.
Mix according to directions. Wear rubber gloves.
Debra there is also a spray paint that requires no sanding or prepping at all. I could not believe it but my little hardware store actually carries it. Its made by Krylon. This paint is not to be confused with the Krylon no prep paint for plastic. So look into that as well. Perhaps your hardware will carry it but I am in Canada so I can't be certain.
Good Luck with your project
Kind Regards
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
