Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Break Fluid on table removed varnish

Question
I just bought a brand new dining room table at the end of January. My
husband put break fluid on the table and the bottle leaked. There is about a
7 inch by 1 inch spot on the table where the varnish is gone and it is down to
the wood. It is a large, round, pedestal table that seats 6. If I sand down the
spot and around, re-stain, and re-clear coat will it work? Will I have to clear
coat the entire table top? Please help!!! I have cried my eyes out over my new
table being ruined. Thanks so much!
AnswerHi Staceyann
Nice to hear from you.
This looks like real wood and not one of those colored toned lacquer finishes but the clear coat will no doubt be lacquer if the table is new. Was this custom made by chance?
There is only one thing to try and you pretty much hit the nail on the head with your thoughts. Sand, stain and clear coat.
Use very fine sandpaper to try to feather out the damage.
The table looks pretty dark but pictures can be deceiving.
Going just by the picture I would try Minwax dark mahogany as the stain but you must be the judge and experiment under the table top with some stain colors.
If the table is new you should be able to contact the sales room to get an ID on the clear coat. Its important you know what clear coat to apply.
Stacey if you have doubts about your ability to fix this then get a pro to do the job which is my recommendation. I feel the stain selection will be the tricky part but the table can certainly be fixed.
Kind Regards
