Question
I have been comparing exterior doors. Mahogony, oak and cherry are very nice!! I saw one that was made of Fir. Is that a suitable wood for an exterior door? Thanks for your help. And I LOVE your SPAM guarantee!! :-)
Hi Kathy, White Oak and Mahogany, and even cherry will outlast a Fir door. Fir is a fairly soft wood, and a Pine which makes it rather dull and mundane when finishing as compared to any of the other three. Pine will be the cheapest though, so if you want to consider paint, it's a perfect choice. Mahogany, Oak, and Cherry doors will be much more substantial chunks 'o wood, and will stain and clear finish beautifully, and because of their density, will offer slightly better noise and temperature insulation.
