Question
QUESTION: I have a flat surface type of cabinet doors.  It has a dark laminated surface that is old and dingy.  I would like to give it a fresh, brighter look with a new laminate.

What do you advise about laminating over laminated cabinets?

ANSWER: Hello Hanh
Nice to hear from you.
I don't see any problem with doing this as long as the old laminate is well prepped.
It would be  important the old laminate be 100 % grease free.
I would also sand it well.

Eileen

QUESTION: Can you define what you would consider to be "well prepped"?

Answer
Hi again Hanh
First the doors must be grease free.
Wipe them down with mineral spirits (called varsol in Canada) and a rag.
After that I would sand the doors with 120 grit sandpaper on my random orbit sander.
These doors are now well prepped and ready for the new laminate.
Good Luck
Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
