Question
I am sanding by hand some doors and drawers, which have been stripped, so that I can refinish a large dresser.  The sanding dust is getting on the floor, and on my apron,
and all over. I am wondering if you recommend wearing a mask while sanding? Is it risky to inhale the sanding dust for many hours while sanding?

Hope to hear from you,
Many thanks,
Sue

Answer
Sue,

I'm guilty of sanding without a mask all the time, and I'm not proud of it. Some woods are certainly more toxic than others, but the fact is - all sawdust is probably bad for our lungs. I highly recommend using a mask, especially if you're sanding in a small space. I try to sand outside, when possible.

When in doubt, be safe and wear that mask!

Good luck with your sanding!
