Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/loose side rails on antique cherry bed

Question
The side rails on subject bed snap into the metal receiver;but, there are gaps between the rails and the bedpost leaving the bed with a lot of play between the rails and post.
I have tried to put cardboard between the rails and post ;but, the bed is still has a lot of movement.
How would you advise how to tighten up the bed frame?
Also, it is a full size and I am six feet two and my feet hit the footrail. Is there a way I could extend the rails a few inches?

Answer
Hi Stewart
Nice to hear from you.
Try using wood shims instead of cardboard.
No way to extend the rails if they are wood other than having longer ones cut and trying to get the hooks out of the old one into the new (not an easy job), but iron could be cut and a piece welded on to make it longer. This is not as difficult as one might think and in the right hands there would not be any weakness in this splice.
Hope this helps

Eileen

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
