Question
I have just bought a waterfall bedroom set and would like to clean it up and cover scratches,in a post you said to get tung oil...I am from northwest Indiana where might I find this tung oil and is there link I can order it on line? Is it safe for all wood and will it help revive old pieces with water marks or scratches.

Answer
Hi Sue, pure tung oil is not advised, what you need is a tung oil finish, a modified tung oil that has Phenolics and/or other resins added to make it dry better and harder.....you can get them from Ace hardware, online at places like WoodCraft, Woodworker.com, VanDykes, etc., brands like Formby's, Waterlox, Watco, etc. I would caution however, that the type of pieces you're describing were likely lacquered, and the tung oil/varnish preparations may not do much to a damaged lacquer finish, and are probably not a good idea to coat over lacquer with. Not sure which post you saw, but as a general rule, one can not coat lacquer with varnish or vice versa. In a case like that you'll have to get into more invasive techniques up to, and possibly including, stripping and refinishing them...scratches might be handled better with a touch up marker, before applying anything to the finish. Post back if need be, here are a few links:
