Question

Pine cupboards
The varnish is coming off and I want to know if I can redo them without too much work. Can I add a stain to the varnish and do it that way? What prep will I need to do first.

Yes your cupboards need help badly.
I don't have much to go on here Helen but I don't think this is varnish.
If they are hand made cupboards this looks like water based poly.
If they are factory cupboards its likely lacquer but the damage I see steers me to water based poly.
