Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/veneered dresser

Question
I have an old dresser from an estate auction, the top of it has an oak veneer on it that was partially stripped off, how do I get the rest of the glue and veneer off. I would like to put new veneer on it.

Answer
Hi Jennifer
Nice to hear from you.
I find removing veneer quite easy using a heat gun on high setting.
An iron on high works too but it will really mess up the iron as it is placed directly on the veneer. This softens the glue.
Then you use a metal scraper to get under the veneer to pry it up.
With a heat gun you just direct the heat on an edge, get your scraper under the veneer and work across the top. Heat on top scraper under the veneer..like that.
Good Luck

Expertise

Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.

Experience

I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
