Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Repair stained cabinet trim

Question
My tile counter top has a wood trim that is maple with a light white wash over it.  A reed diffuser was set against it and the oil in the reeds removed the stain.  I have sanded down to the wood.  What do I do next?

Also, the area around the knobs on this same maple/white washed cabinet doors have become shiney and looks like the white wash has worn off.  Any way to repair that?

Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Sharr, this is a "pickled" finish, and it's a white glaze that's then clear coated, usually with lacquer. Trying to repair a worn area of this type of finish is not easy, and takes some experience. Typically, spot repair of this type of finish doesn't work well, if at all. I wouldn't recommend you try it if you don't have experience with this type of finish repair. I would consult a Pro restorer or cabinet finisher to evaluate it with you, and they should offer that at no charge. These finish techniques are quite advanced, and require equipment, experience, and materials that the novice just won't have access to in most cases. Hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
