Question
Hi,
We have a light oak vanity which is varnished. I go to know
I could use a paint/varnish remover to peel the varnish and
sand it before staining with a darker tone. The question I
have is what type of sander or sanding tool to use for the
sanding? Also is it advisable to rent one or buy one if
there is only one vanity that needs to be sanded? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Rajesh, once properly stripped the vanity should need almost no sanding, so just a piece of 150 grit sandpaper should be all you need. Once the finish is stripped the vanity will be in the same shape it was before the finish was applied....smooth and ready for finishing. Oak is notoriously hard to stain dark, so use a Dye based stain, NOT a pigmented oil type stain. Hope that helps- post back if need be- Greg
