Question
Hi Greg,

We have a Teak Dining table which must be about 30 years old.  I would like to refresh the look.  It is only patchy with age/sunlight (no specific damage).  What is the best way to set about restoring it?

Answer
Hi Irene, typically these older tables were just finished with an oil finish, a satin to flat finish that shows the wood pores and is not a surface film finish like lacquer or varnishes. If the color is "patchy", then it might need to be stripped, but if the color is even overall, but the table just looks"dry", you can get an oil finish like Watco, or Teak oil, and give it a few coats of that allowing each coat to dry 24hrs. These oil finishes are a blend of Phenolics, driers and other resins that penetrate the wood and then dry to a hard finish. Take a rag wet with mineral spirits and wipe down the table. If it looks fine when wet, the you can be assured that's what it will look like when you apply the oil finish.....if it looks blotchy or uneven, you'll need to strip and prep the top. Post back if need be and I can help further- regards- Greg
