AboutEileen Cronk Expertise Hi..I can answer most questions about the repairing, stripping and refinishing of all your old furniture and wood items(the things we call antiques)I can give advice about what to buy/avoid at auctions/flea markets. I do not give appraisals on antiques.
Experience I have been refinishing antiques for the past 30yrs. While I have taken several courses over the years,I have found that "hands on" learning is the best teacher. Perhaps I can help you avoid some of the mistakes I made while learning.
Question I have a small teak table about 30 years old which on which nothing was done/used except for the occasional use of Pledge (I know, I know)or Murphy's Soap(?). I would like to put a varnish on it or something to make it waterproof. What do I use to get off the Pledge or possibly Murphy's Soap and what do I use to make it waterproof. It's not an antique just a table I made back when.
Thank you
Answer Hi Marg
Nice to hear from you.
Pick up a small can of paint stripper at the hardware.
Apply a coat over the top and wait a few minutes. Then rag off and rub the top with medium steel wool until the top is dry.
Real easy process and now your table is ready for some stain (if you want some color), then 3 coats of Minwax fast drying oil based poly.
The satin has a lovely mellow look and its very durable. I have it on my kitchen eating table.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen
