Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks - Cedar wall paneling

Expert: Greg Scholl - 7/5/2009

Question
I sent a message previously, and am unsure if it went through to you.  The question we have is how long does cedar paneling remain effective?  We have a walk in, carpeted closet which was completely cedar lined in 1992.  Do we need to do anything to continue for it to be effective?  The reason for the question is that we currently have an unknown infestation some of the clothing, (about 6 - 8 casual tops), and the garments in question have very tiny holes which have appeared.  They are made of cotton, cotton/polyester, and cotton/polyester/spandex.  So far, no moths can be found, and a pest control company which came out has not been able to find the source of the problem.  Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Anita, a Cedar lined closet may not prevent insects from inhabiting the clothes, unless it's air tight, like in a Cedar chest. The Cedar "smell", is really not enough to deter them from clothes, they definitely won't nest in or bore into the wood, but as far as a Cedar lining making a walk in closet completely impervious to insects, I don't believe so, especially because carpet is an easy place for lot's of things to breed, hide, and live. I would quarantine the worst piece of clothing in a large zip lock bag, put it in direct sunlight for a few hours to heat it up to kill anything alive, and then have someone inspect it under a microscope for signs of insects. I'm not sure if the pest people would do this, but that's what would need to be done....
