Question
I am going to cut my TV cabinet down so I can place a new wide screen TV on top.  I want to make 4 cuts (2 top of opening and 2 at bottom) then join them creating a smaller shelf and a large table top. I do not want to splinter the wood as I cut.  How can I do this and what is the best tool. I have a jig saw and a circular saw.

Answer
Circular saw would be best. Set to not too high above surface of wood. Should cut clean. Sometimes if its too high you get splintering. I would not even go near the jigsaw. Obviously table saw with level surface would be best. But I think you will be ok with circular. Slow and easy, keep steady and don't stop anywhere through the cut.
