Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks - Damaged Kitchen Cabinet Door

Expert: Greg Scholl - 7/3/2009

Question
Hi Greg, I stuck one of my sons drawings on a kitchen door cupboard with selotape.  A few months later when I removed it the buttermilk coloured patina came away where the selotape had been.  It is now showing the white of what I think is MDF.  Is there any particular type of paint that would cover this? If so should I go over the whole door or just try and touch up where the problem is?

Answer
Hi Jan, this type of damage is difficult to touch up well, even for an experienced restorer, especially if it's at eye level. I'm assuming this is like the "scotchtape" we refer to over here....clear cellophane type "everyday" tape. We often perform a test with this tape to judge how well a finish is adhering to a substrate to gauge whether it can be safely finished over or restored.Yours failed....lol Are your cabinets factory finished?,...or perhaps they have been repainted in the past? An Acrylic hobby type paint might work, but matching the color can be quite daunting, especially if it's got a glaze or other type of distressed finish.I would try to touch up the spot, as you'll definitely not be able to match a whole door, and that will really be noticeable. If it is a factory finish, then perhaps they could provide some touch up material. Post back if need be, hope that helped a little though- regards- Greg
