Cabinets, Furniture, Woodworks/Pecan Stain

Question
I have just finished sanding a large piece of diseased pecan for a fireplace mantle.  I want the natural beauty of the grain and the disease damage to come through. I tried a some teak oil on a scrap piece and it looked really good.  How would teak oil work on pecan or maybe a better suggestion?

Answer
Teak oil would be fine, but takes rather long to dry and can be a fairly dark brown. I would get a can of WaterLox,(available online or at WoodCraft stores), which is the perfect oil finish for your mantle. A modified Tung oil/varnish finish, it is light in color, slightly warm amber, dries predictably, penetrates the wood so it doesn't chip, flake, etc...and applies easily.....it's also available in different Gloss levels, but it takes several coats to obtain any Gloss from it as it's a penetrating oil. I swear by the stuff on that type of project ("original" is my fave)...it is really a fantastic, time tested product.Hope that helps- Regards- Greg
