Question
I have 3/4" birch plywood cabinet doors from the mid-60s.  I would like to cut our the centers leaving a 2 to 2-1/2 inch perimeter and then route in the inner edge so that I can insert and 1/4" bead board panel.  Will this work or will I have problems with the doors warping?

Answer
Hi Rhonda, yes, you would risk the doors warping, although if they're flat now, they're probably fairly stable after 40+ years. If the beadboard is only 1/4", it's not going to add any additional strength to the door, though, and cutting out the centers will definitely take strength away. why not apply the beadboard to the fronts of the doors and then put a molding around the beadboard to simulate a separate panel? I have done this on a few occasions to dress up a hollow core door, to make it look like a paneled door, and it's quite effective. It would also be a lot less work! It doesn't look exactly the same as an inset panel as you want to create, but it's a similar look. Hope that helps a little- post back if need be- regards- Greg
